The phenomenal rediscovery of two curved plywood chairs designed by Carlo Mollino that had disappeared after production.

Extensive expertise regarding Carlo Mollino’s work led the authors of this book to rediscover two outstanding chairs, both of which had disappeared after being produced in 1951. They are the first curved-plywood chair created exclusively by the architect for a Copenhagen exhibition and a second chair with a flexible seat designed for Mario Lattes.

The two pieces were produced using two different hot- and cold-curving techniques. The book explores these processes – developed in the Apelli & Varesio workshop in Turin – in detail and new testimonies help, at last, to clarify the cold-bending plywood process studied by Mollino for a patent in the 1950s.

Mollino. Plywood was published in conjunction with the presentation of the two extraordinary curved-plywood chairs exhibited at TEFAF 2014 in Maastricht.

Photographs taken by Antoine Bootz in New York are accompanied by extensive archive material and a new picture biography reflecting all Carlo Mollino’s activities throughout his career.
